SNAAP is dedicated to helping people and animals affected by violence in the Washington, D.C. area.

We are an all-volunteer organization that supports efforts to prevent domestic violence and animal cruelty in the nation's capital through education, advocacy and referrals to pet-friendly safe housing.

Safe Animals, Safe People

Domestic violence affects all family members, including pets. Our mission is to raise awareness about domestic violence and animal cruelty in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, and to provide assistance to victims both human and animal. By recognizing the connection between domestic violence, animal cruelty and child abuse, we hope to better identify violent homes in order to prevent future abuse.

Our main program is the Safe Haven Program, a result of a partnership between SNAAP and the Washington Humane Society. Together, we work with local domestic violence organizations to temporarily shelter pets of domestic violence survivors by placing them in confidential foster homes. Our main goal is to ensure that both the human and animal victims of domestic violence are safe from abuse.

Similar to what occurred during Hurricane Katrina where hurricane victims refused to leave after the storm because emergency shelters would not take their pets, many pet-owners will not leave a pet behind in an abusive situation. In one national study, up to 48% of women said they had delayed leaving an abusive situation because they feared for the safety of their pet. By providing the Safe Haven Program, it is our hope that survivors will be more inclined to leave an abusive situation and seek services knowing that their pet will be safe if they choose to leave.
To enroll in the Safe Haven Program, have your domestic violence advocate contact the Washington Humane Society at (202) 723-5730.

Animal Cruelty & Neglect

SNAAP works closely with the Humane Law Enforcement officers at the Washington Humane Society to combat animal cruelty in the District. We attend animal cruelty trials and advocate for public awareness of animal cruelty and neglect investigations.

Don’t look away from animal cruelty. Do something.
